A new side project from me: Salt Lake Gridy.
It’s a daily GeoGuessr-style game for the Salt Lake Valley.
Salt Lake’s address grid is a coordinate system. Anyone who has lived here for a while can hear “900 East and 3300 South” and picture the intersection.
How it runs
Harvesting locations works like this: sample a random point in the valley, ask Mapillary for street-level photos near it, download one, compute its grid address with the calibrated model, then have Claude look at the photo and decide whether it’s usable.
There’s also an admin page where I can review the staged week, reject bad photos, and upload my own. For uploads, the location is taken from the photo’s EXIF GPS data.
The frontend is vanilla JavaScript with MapLibre on an OpenFreeMap base, styled in the blue, white, and gold of the Salt Lake City flag.
Launch day
On Sunday, October 11, I posted it to r/SaltLakeCity.
An hour and a half later, 222 people had played. By the end of the day:
| Players | 628 |
| Finished the puzzle | 471 (75%) |
| Average score | 305 / 500 |
| Best score | 471 / 500 |
